Over-Rated Web Sites?

Posted: September 2nd, 2010   |   Category: Blog

TIME Magazine has released its list of the Top 5 over-rated sites.  Somehow, they missed their own site?

Just kidding!

For the record – and saving you from having to jump through 5 full page loads, costing their advertisers more money – here’s the list:

  1. MySpace, replaced by some other social platform
  2. Pandora, the radio streaming site
  3. Craigslist, which I believe is NOT over-rated
  4. Blogger, Google’s blogging tool which has had the tar kicked out of it by WordPress, Drupal and other open-source platforms
  5. Digg, the ‘I like this’ news compiler and aggregator

With the exception of Craigslist, I’d be inclined to agree with their summary.

What are 5 sites that you feel have over-extended their usefulness or that have been beat out by a competitor?

Let’s turn this into something fun too:  what are 5 Internet services (I’m not saying sites) that you simply can’t live without?

Mine are:

  1. Google (Search, Gmail, Maps, Apps, AdWords, Analytics)
  2. The CBC.ca (and a small handful of other news/info sites)
  3. SoulSeek, the music download service
  4. Clickz.com
  5. LinkedIn
  6. Lego.com

OK, that’s 6, but I’ll stop there.  I’m pretty boring, aren’t I?  Yeah … there’s the cool new stuff like Gowalla, Foursquare, gaming sites, TED, Zagat, Expedia (or other travel sites), Bricklink (a Lego site), etc, but the list above represents sites that I visit pretty much every day.

Please post your thoughts in the comments below.  I’d love to know what people want to share as their ‘regular 5′ as opposed to the ’5 popular / trendy’ sites.
